Still, Settled and Supported: How Meditation, Mindfulness and Reiki Work Together

Heidi Rearden

So many of us are living with our nervous systems turned up too high.

Not because we are doing anything wrong, but because modern life asks a great deal of us. The constant noise, the mental lists, the sense that we should always be doing more or doing better. Over time that accumulates. It shows up as anxiety, broken sleep, a low hum of tension that never quite leaves your shoulders, or a fatigue that no amount of rest seems to touch.

These are not failings. They are simply your nervous system asking for something it has not had enough of rest, softness and a little space to settle.

That is where meditation and mindfulness come in.

What meditation does

Meditation works by gently guiding your nervous system out of its stress response and into a quieter more restorative state. With regular practice you begin to recognise what calm feels like in your body, not as something you have to chase or manufacture, but as something already present, waiting to be noticed.

Mindfulness extends that quality of awareness into everyday life. It helps you catch stress before it takes hold and find your way back to balance more easily, even in the middle of a full and demanding day.

The science is clear. Research from Dr Herbert Benson and others confirms what practitioners have known for centuries, that consistent meditation practice creates real measurable change. Better sleep, reduced anxiety, a steadier emotional baseline and a body that has permission to rest.

You do not need to sit cross-legged on the floor or empty your mind. You don’t need to have tried it before or be naturally calm. All you need is a willingness to show up and a little guidance to help you find your way.

How Reiki weaves in

Reiki works with the body’s energy, gently clearing what has become stuck or depleted and restoring a natural sense of flow and balance. At the heart of this work is the chakra system, the body’s seven main energy centres that each govern different aspects of our physical, emotional and mental wellbeing. The chakra system’s importance is recognised in reflexology, acupuncture, yoga and originating from traditional ancient practices.

When our chakras are out of balance, we often feel it without quite knowing why. A persistent sense of unease, difficulty thinking clearly, feeling emotionally overwhelmed or simply disconnected from ourselves. Reiki energy healing works to gently rebalance these centres, supporting the body and mind to return to a more harmonious and settled state.

Where meditation works with the mind and breath, Reiki works with the body’s own intelligence, supporting it to release tension held at a deep level. Together they are a beautifully complementary pairing. Meditation creates the stillness. Reiki deepens it. Many of my clients find that when both are experienced together a sense of calm can be lasting.
